Short Description

Cycling the Danube from Passau to Vienna is Europe's classic river ride, flat and paved all the way. You will roll past vineyards, abbeys and the Schlögen Loop, with your bags waiting at each new hotel.

Tour Program

Day 1: Passau
You will arrive in Passau, the City of Three Rivers, where the Danube, Inn and Ilz meet. Take your time wandering the picturesque old town before dinner. If you rent a bike, you can collect it between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. – late arrivals pick it up the next morning between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.

Day 2: Passau – Schlögen Loop (approx. 41 km; 33 km for Category C)
Your first stage follows the Upper Danube Valley towards Schlögen. In Engelhartszell you can stop at Austria's only Trappist monastery and taste the liqueurs made there. By late afternoon you will reach the Schlögen Loop, where the river turns a full 180 degrees between wooded slopes.

Day 3: Schlögen Loop – Linz (approx. 55 km; 69 km for Category C)
Small passenger ferries will carry you from one bank to the other. The valley slowly opens into the fertile Eferding basin. You will arrive in Linz, capital of Upper Austria and European Capital of Culture 2009, just in time for a summer evening around its main square.

Day 4: Linz – Strudengau (approx. 60 km)
A short detour to Enns, the oldest town in Austria, is well worth it. Then you will glide through quiet meadows and hinterland, past the Celtic village of Mitterkirchen and the church of Baumgartenberg, towards the romantic Clam Castle.

Day 5: Strudengau – Nibelungengau (approx. 50 km)
Steep, densely wooded rock walls rise on both sides of the river today. High above the water stands the pilgrimage church of Maria Taferl. Further on, the Benedictine Abbey of Melk will greet you from afar.

Day 6: Nibelungengau – Krems/surroundings (approx. 50 km)
This is the Wachau: vineyards, apricot orchards, castles and monasteries line your route. If your legs want a rest, you can hop on an excursion boat for a stretch. You will pedal through the wine villages of Spitz, Weißenkirchen and Dürnstein, where cosy taverns invite you to stop. In the Wachau a bottle of local wine awaits you in your room.

Day 7: Krems/surroundings – Vienna (approx. 40 km + train Krems – Tulln)
A short train ride, bike included, will take you out of the UNESCO World Heritage Wachau to Tulln. From here you will cycle your final stage. Near Vienna the valley narrows once more at the Vienna Gate, at the edge of the Vienna Woods, and the path leads you via Klosterneuburg into the City of Music.

Day 8: Vienna
Your tour ends after breakfast. Stroll the Naschmarkt, see the State Opera and the Ringstrasse, or visit Schönbrunn Palace. You can extend your stay, or travel back to Passau by train (Seasons 1 and 2) or by bus (Season 3).

From the 27th day until the 14th day prior to departure 30%.

From the 13th day until the 8th day prior to departure 50%.

From the 7th until the 4th day prior to departure 70%.

From the 3rd day or with no-show for the tour 90%.
