Short Description

Cycle the Danube from Vienna to Budapest on this athletic 6-day self-guided tour, linking three capitals across Austria, Slovakia and Hungary. Longer daily stages carry you through wild floodplains, the island maze of the Szigetköz and the hills of the Danube Bend.

Tour Program

Day 1: Vienna
You arrive in the waltz metropolis at your own pace, and the evening is yours. Wander the imperial streets of the old town, or settle into a traditional Viennese wine tavern for hearty local fare. Vienna is the perfect prelude to the sporty week ahead.

Day 2: Vienna – Bratislava (approx. 68 km)
Just beyond the city, the Danube Floodplains National Park opens up, an idyllic wilderness of water, forest and abundant birdlife. You will ride past Orth Castle and Eckartsau Castle to the spa town of Bad Deutsch Altenburg, where the Romans once left their mark. Ahead, the Slovak capital Bratislava enchants with its dreamy old town, its magnificent buildings and the castle towering high above the river.

Day 3: Bratislava – Györ (approx. 82 km)
Today you enter the Szigetköz, a paradise for birds and fish. In the middle of this untouched landscape of small islands and a labyrinth of Danube side arms, you will find sleepy farming villages. Your destination is Györ, set where three rivers meet and crowned by a graceful baroque old town.

Day 4: Györ – Esztergom (approx. 95 km, or approx. 52 km with the recommended train section)
Gently undulating farmland leads you back to the Danube at the divided town of Komarno, the favourite town of King Matthias. You will follow the Slovak bank on embankment paths and quiet side roads through small farming villages, passing the Roman fort of Kelemantia. Your goal is the episcopal and royal city of Esztergom, whose basilica, the largest church in Hungary, is the glittering highlight of the tour. To shorten the day, you can take the comfortable train between Györ and Komarno.

Day 5: Esztergom – Budapest (approx. 91 km)
The hilly landscape of the Danube Bend works its magic as you cycle through small, idyllic villages. You will discover the little artists' town of Szentendre with its nearby open-air farm museum, then enjoy a fantastic view of Budapest's most famous landmarks as you roll into the city.

Day 6: Budapest
Your tour ends after a leisurely morning. Budapest is superbly connected, with trains to Vienna every hour (about three hours) and buses that also stop at Vienna Airport.
