Vienna to Trieste Cycling Tour

Day 1: Arrival in Vienna
Your journey begins in the lively city of the waltz. The afternoon is yours: stroll through the imperial centre, or head out to a traditional Viennese Heuriger for a glass of local wine.

Day 2: Vienna – Wiener Neustadt (approx. 61 km)
Time to saddle up. You will leave the city behind and ride into the wine country of the spa region, where small villages keep their wine-tavern culture alive. In Baden, the spa town with its thermal springs is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening you will explore Wiener Neustadt, a medieval fortress town built with the ransom paid for Richard the Lionheart.

Day 3: Wiener Neustadt – Semmering – Bruck an der Mur (approx. 63 km)
The day starts on rails. The Semmering Railway (included), the world's first mountain railway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will carry you over viaducts and through tunnels to Semmering. From there you will cycle through the mountain scenery of Styria to Bruck an der Mur, a small town of medieval buildings.

Day 4: Bruck an der Mur – Graz (approx. 61 km)
You will follow the Mur Cycle Path along Austria's second-largest river, through the green heart of Styria. Alpine valleys slowly give way to the milder climate of the Graz basin. Graz, the capital of Styria, awaits with the Schlossberg and a historic old town, both UNESCO World Heritage.

Day 5: Graz – Maribor (approx. 75 km)
Southern Styria is one of the highlights of the route. Vineyards roll across the hills and traditional wine taverns invite you to stop and taste regional specialities. Across the border, Maribor welcomes you with the oldest grapevine in the world, narrow streets and historic squares.

Day 6: Maribor – Celje/Laško (approx. 77–89 km)
The hilly wine region of Lower Styria is one of Slovenia's most important, and local wineries line your way. You will reach Celje, Slovenia's third-largest city, and can ride on to Laško, a small town known for its thermal springs and its long brewing tradition. A visit to the brewery makes a fitting end to the stage.

Day 7: Celje/Laško – Ljubljana (approx. 66–100 km)
Traditional Slovenian villages follow one another, and the rural rhythm of the countryside will set your pace. After a short climb to the Trojane Pass, wide views over mountains and valleys open up – stop for the famous Trojane doughnuts. If you wish, you can shorten the stage by train between Hrastnik and Sava. In the evening you will discover Ljubljana: the Triple Bridge, Prešeren Square and the castle above the river Ljubljanica.

Day 8: Ljubljana – Postojna (approx. 60 km)
Today you will ride into the karst, a landscape of caves, rocks and underground rivers. Postojna is famous for its caves, one of the largest karst cave systems in the world. Just a few kilometres away, Predjama Castle clings dramatically to a rock face.

Day 9: Postojna – Trieste (approx. 76 km)
Crossing the Slovenian karst, you will catch your first Mediterranean impressions in Italy and your first views of the Adriatic coast. Trieste is the perfect finale: once the main port of the Habsburg monarchy, it blends Italian and Austrian culture, elegant architecture and a lively coffee-house tradition.

Day 10: Departure from Trieste
Your cycling holiday ends by the sea. Travel home at your leisure or add extra nights in Trieste.
