Surprising Umbria: 7-Day Cycling Tour from Assisi to Spoleto

Day 1: Assisi
You will arrive in Assisi, a medieval city built on the slopes of Monte Subasio, overlooking the fertile Umbrian Valley. Narrow lanes twist between ancient palaces and open onto sunlit piazzas with tinkling fountains — a maze that invites you to wander at leisure. The Basilica of San Francesco, the Basilica of Santa Chiara and the hilltop Rocca Maggiore are just a few of the treasures waiting to be explored. Day 2: Assisi – Spello – Assisi (38 km; +138 m / –141 m)
After breakfast you will saddle up for your first ride into the green Umbrian Valley. Quiet lanes descend to the plain and lead you to Spello, perched proudly at the foot of Monte Subasio. The town has kept its medieval charm intact: wander through a maze of alleys and flower-filled piazzas, visit the Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore with its Pinturicchio-frescoed Cappella Baglioni, the church of Sant'Andrea, the Roman Porta Consolare and the Roman mosaics. You will return to your accommodation pedalling through fields of cereals, sunflowers, vines and olive trees.

Day 3: Assisi – Torgiano (34 km; +125 m / –106 m)
Your ride begins with a visit to the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, whose great dome shelters the tiny Porziuncola chapel where Saint Francis once lived. From here you will pedal along quiet country roads through golden fields and vineyards to Torgiano, an ancient fortified village at the confluence of the Tiber and Chiascio rivers. Do not miss the acclaimed Wine Museum, housed in the 17th-century Palazzo Graziani-Baglioni. You will spend the night in the historic centre.

Day 4: Torgiano – Casco dell'Acqua (37.5 km; +138 m / –141 m)
The Umbrian countryside will be your companion once again. You will pedal to Cannara, a village renowned for its famous red onion festival, surrounded by fertile farmland. A final stretch of cycle path brings you to Casco dell'Acqua, set along the River Clitunno. Your country house is an eco-friendly retreat with a saltwater pool.

Day 5: Casco dell'Acqua – Bevagna – Casco dell'Acqua (34 km; +108 m / –109 m)
You will ride to Bevagna, one of the rare medieval towns built on the valley floor. Piazza Silvestri is its vibrant heart, flanked by the Gothic Palazzo dei Consoli and two graceful Romanesque churches. Explore the Roman mosaics and cobbled lanes, then pedal back to your country house.

Day 6: Casco dell'Acqua – Spoleto (25 km; +191 m / –160 m)
Your final cycling day will take you south to Spoleto, recognisable from afar by the imposing Rocca Albornoziana. You will enter through the cycle path and, past Porta Garibaldi, leave your bike to explore on foot: the Romanesque cathedral, the spectacular Ponte delle Torri aqueduct, the Roman amphitheatre and the winding medieval streets. Your hotel with pool sits just outside the city, nestled among olive trees.

Day 7: Departure
After breakfast your tour comes to an end. If you left your car at the first hotel in Assisi, you may return by train or arrange a private transfer.
