From Munich to Milan: Cycling Across the Alps to Lombardy

Day 1: Arrival in Munich
Individual arrival at your hotel in Munich.

Day 2: Munich – Bad Tölz
Following the Isar River, you will leave Munich behind and find yourself immediately immersed in unspoiled nature and lush forests. Bavarian abbeys and picturesque villages line the route as you ride through the Isar wetlands. Your destination is Bad Tölz, a renowned spa town where baroque architecture meets the dramatic backdrop of the Alps rising to the south.

Day 3: Bad Tölz – Schwaz/Jenbach or Maurach
Today you will continue along the Isar to Lake Sylvenstein, then cross the Karwendel Nature Park into Austria, reaching the Achensee region and its stunning mountain lake. A boat trip on the Achensee is possible before you ride on through the Inn Valley to Maurach, Jenbach, or Schwaz.

Day 4: Schwaz/Jenbach or Maurach – Bressanone (+ train or bus)
You will ride the Inn Valley cycle path to Innsbruck, capital of Tyrol, where a stroll through the old town reveals the famous Golden Roof and the Bergisel ski jump. A train or bus transfer takes you over the demanding stretch between Innsbruck and the Brenner Pass into Italy. From the pass you will coast along the old railway line through Vipiteno and Fortezza down to Bressanone.

Day 5: Bressanone – Caldaro/Mendola
The route leads south through the verdant Isarco Valley, past vineyards and through Bolzano, the vibrant capital of Alto Adige. Along the celebrated Alto Adige Wine Road you will pass enchanting villages and approach the Mendola Pass area, where mountains frame the ride, before arriving in Caldaro, renowned for its picturesque lake and fine wines.

Day 6: Caldaro/Mendola – Passo Tonale – Ponte di Legno
The day opens with the funicular up to the Mendola Pass, where your ride begins. You will coast through the Val di Non, celebrated for its apple orchards — spectacular in blossom in May — past medieval castles and with the Brenta Dolomites forming a dramatic backdrop. Crossing the Tonale Pass, you will finish the day in Ponte di Legno.

Day 7: Ponte di Legno – Darfo Boario Terme (70 km)
Today you will discover the Val Camonica, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve renowned for its ancient rock carvings — more than 300,000 of them, preserved across seven archaeological parks. Imposing medieval fortresses punctuate the valley as you ride southward to Darfo Boario Terme, celebrated for its thermal springs — a wonderful blend of nature, history, and well-being.

Day 8: Darfo Boario Terme – Bergamo (80–85 km)
From Darfo Boario Terme you will ride down to Lake Iseo, its still water framed by mountains. The route then threads through the Valle Cavallina along the shores of the pre-alpine lakes of Gaiano and Endine, lined with old villages, medieval towers and castles. The day ends with a ride into Bergamo's Città Alta, with its ancient UNESCO-listed walls and characteristic medieval lanes.

Day 9: Bergamo – Milan (80–85 km)
Your final stage leaves Bergamo for the River Serio and its nature park, passing the castles of Cavernago and Malpaga. Cycle paths along the Serio lead to the medieval village of Cologno al Serio, still ringed by its walls and its spring-fed moat. After a stretch of farmed Po plain you will reach the River Adda, crossed on a cycle-and-footbridge that brings you to the Naviglio Martesana — a historic canal of villages, locks and waterworks that Leonardo da Vinci himself worked on. The Martesana towpath carries you straight into the heart of Milan along the old waterways that linked the city to its trading and artistic past.
