Short Description

Cycle the Altmühl Valley from medieval Rothenburg to the Danube at Regensburg — eight days along one of the most beautiful river valleys in Germany. Striking rock formations, Roman traces, castles, the world's largest rock crystal group in Riedenburg, and an optional boat trip through the Danube Gorge to Weltenburg Abbey.

Tour Program

Day 1 — Arrival in Rothenburg
Settle into Rothenburg, where your travel documents and rental bikes (if booked) are handed over at the hotel. Explore the medieval town at your own pace before your first overnight.

Day 2 — Rothenburg to Ansbach (54 km)
Pedal to the source of the Altmühl at Hornauer Weiher, then follow the river past Colmberg and its Hohenzollern castle and through Lehrberg to Ansbach. Entry to Ansbach Castle is included (closed on Mondays).

Day 3 — Ansbach to Wettelsheim / Weißenburg (65 km)
Ride past Lake Altmühl to Gunzenhausen, then continue via Trommetsheim to Weißenburg or Wettelsheim.

Day 4 — Weißenburg to Eichstätt (50 km)
Pass the Karlsgraben — Charlemagne’s unfinished Rhine-Danube canal — and enter the winding heart of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The route winds through the beautiful Kerbtal in the Franconian Alb to the old bishop’s town of Eichstätt.

Day 5 — Eichstätt to Beilngries (44 km)
Follow the Altmühl past Walting and Arnsberg to Kipfenberg, with its castle and townscape, and finally to Beilngries.

Day 6 — Beilngries to Kelheim (48 km)
Cycle through Dietfurt to Riedenburg, where you visit the Crystal Museum and the world’s largest rock crystal group (entry included; closed on Mondays). Continue along the Main-Danube Canal with its modern lock system to Kelheim, where the Altmühl meets the Danube.

Day 7 — Kelheim to Regensburg (38 km + optional 50-min boat)
Optional boat trip through the dramatic Danube Gorge from Kelheim to Weltenburg Abbey and back (approx. €21.50, payable on site). Then ride along the Danube past Saal an der Donau and Bad Abbach to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg, well worth seeing.

Day 8 — Departure
