Altmühl Classic — Rothenburg to Regensburg

Day 1 — Arrival in Rothenburg
Settle into the medieval walled town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Wander the half-timbered lanes and city walls at your own pace before your first overnight.

Day 2 — Rothenburg to Ansbach (54 km)
Pedal to the source of the Altmühl at Hornauer Weiher, then follow the river past Colmberg’s hilltop Hohenzollern Castle and through Lehrberg to the baroque Residenz town of Ansbach. Entry to the Residenz palace is included.

Day 3 — Ansbach to Wettelsheim / Weißenburg (65 km)
Ride past Lake Altmühl and the Franconian lakeland to Gunzenhausen, then continue through Trommetsheim to the Roman spa town of Weißenburg.

Day 4 — Weißenburg to Eichstätt (50 km)
Pass the Karlsgraben — Charlemagne’s unfinished Rhine-Danube canal — and enter the winding heart of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The route follows a stunning V-shaped valley through the Franconian Alb to the ancient episcopal town of Eichstätt.

Day 5 — Eichstätt to Beilngries (44 km)
Follow the Altmühl past Walting and the hilltop fortress of Arnsberg to the spa town of Kipfenberg and on to Beilngries at the foot of the Jura cliffs.

Day 6 — Beilngries to Kelheim (48 km)
Cycle through Dietfurt to Riedenburg, where you visit the Crystal Museum and its record-breaking rock crystal cluster (entry included). Continue along the Main-Danube Canal with its modern lock system to Kelheim, where the Altmühl meets the Danube.

Day 7 — Kelheim to Regensburg (38 km + optional boat)
Optional boat trip through the dramatic Danube Gorge from Kelheim to Weltenburg Abbey and back (approx. €16, payable on site). Then ride along the Danube past Saal and the thermal town of Bad Abbach to the UNESCO-listed city of Regensburg.

Day 8 — Departure
End of tour. Departure or extend your stay with additional nights.
