Follow the Altmuhl River from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg on this self-guided cycling journey through the Altmuhltal nature park. Five riding days of 50–68 km lead past Colmberg's Hohenzollern castle, Lake Altmuhl, Charlemagne's Karlsgraben, the old bishop's town of Eichstatt, the Roman fort at Pfunz and the Danube gorge at Kelheim — with a Night Watchman tour in Rothenburg and a Crystal Museum visit in Riedenburg included in the package.

Tour Program

Day 1 — Arrival in Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Settle into Rothenburg at your own pace. Parking is available, subject to availability, in the free public car park at the train station, or for a fee in large car parks outside the old town. Your travel documents and rental bike (if booked) are waiting at your hotel, and at about 9 pm an included, entertaining Night Watchman tour brings the town's medieval past to life. Overnight at a 3-star hotel.

Day 2 — Rothenburg to Ansbach (54 km)
Pedal to the source of the Altmuhl River at the Hornauer Weiher. The Altmuhl cycle path then continues via Colmberg and its Hohenzollern castle and Lehrberg to Ansbach. Overnight at a 3-star hotel.

Day 3 — Ansbach to Weissenburg / Wettelsheim (65 km)
Today's stage heads past Lake Altmuhl to Gunzenhausen, then onward via Trommetsheim to Weissenburg or Wettelsheim. Overnight at a 3-star hotel.

Day 4 — Weissenburg to Eichstatt (50 km)
Pass the Karlsgraben, where Charlemagne tried to build a canal between the Rhine and the Danube, and ride through the Altmuhltal Nature Park with its numerous windings and loops. The route continues through the beautiful Kerbtal in the Franconian Alb to the old bishop's town of Eichstatt. Overnight at a 3-star hotel.

Day 5 — Eichstatt to Riedenburg (68 km)
Through the nature park you cycle past the Roman fort at Pfunz and via Arnsberg and Beilngries to Riedenburg. Here the included Crystal Museum visit shows you the world's largest rock crystal group (closed Mondays). Overnight at a 3-star hotel.

Day 6 — Riedenburg to Regensburg (56 km)
The grand finale. Ride past Essing to Kelheim — a boat trip through the breathtaking Danube gorge from Kelheim to Weltenburg Monastery and back is recommended (approx. EUR 21.50, payable on site). Then cycle past Saal an der Donau and Bad Abbach to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Regensburg, which is well worth seeing. Overnight at a 4-star hotel.

Day 7 — Departure
Time to head home, or extend your stay with additional nights in Regensburg.
