Innsbruck to Venice: 9-Day Leisurely Alpine Crossing

Day 1: Arrival in Innsbruck
Arrive in the Tyrolean capital and settle into your hotel.

Day 2: Innsbruck – Rio Pusteria/Bressanone (approx. 55 km + train)
The tour begins by leaving Innsbruck behind. The demanding stretch between the city and the Brenner Pass, on the border between Austria and Italy, is covered by train or bus — only a few buildings still recall the old frontier. From the pass you will freewheel south along the former railway line through Vipiteno and Fortezza to Rio Pusteria.

Day 3: Rio Pusteria – Dobbiaco/Villabassa (approx. 65 km)
You will follow the River Rienza through the Puster Valley on a well-kept cycle path to Brunico. A stroll along the old town's main street is worthwhile, as is a visit to the open-air folklore museum at Teodone or to the Messner Mountain Museum inside the castle. The Rienza then accompanies you on to Villabassa or Dobbiaco.

Day 4: Dobbiaco/Villabassa – Cortina d'Ampezzo (approx. 35 km)
Today's route follows the cycle path laid on the bed of the former Dolomite railway through the Val di Landro, passing Lake Dobbiaco and the First World War military cemetery. An exceptional panorama opens onto the Tre Cime di Lavaredo before you reach Lake Landro. The gentle climb tops out between the provinces of Bolzano and Belluno, and from there a long, steady descent on the old railway bed carries you into Cortina d'Ampezzo, set among the most celebrated peaks of the Ampezzo Dolomites.

Day 5: Cortina d'Ampezzo – Ponte nelle Alpi/Belluno (approx. 70–80 km)
You will continue gently along the old railway with the Sorapis massif to your left and the Cinque Torri to your right. After crossing the Boite valley you will reach Pieve and Calalzo di Cadore, where a newer cycle path leads down to Longarone, rebuilt after the Vajont disaster of 1963. From Longarone the ride tilts downhill towards Ponte nelle Alpi and Belluno.

Day 6: Ponte nelle Alpi/Belluno – Conegliano (approx. 60 km)
Leaving Belluno behind, you will climb one last ridge. From the top the wide Italian plain opens out below before you drop down to Conegliano which, together with Valdobbiadene, is the home of Prosecco and of Italy's historic school of oenology.

Day 7: Conegliano – Treviso (approx. 50 km)
With the Alps behind you, a calm stage crosses the plain to Treviso, the city of canals and fashion. Along the way you will pass several of the elegant villas designed by Andrea Palladio, whose finest works stand in this area shaped by the maritime power of Venice.

Day 8: Treviso – Venice/Mestre (approx. 45 km)
On the last stretch towards the Adriatic the River Sile is your companion, its cycle path running all the way to Venice Mestre — your base for exploring the Serenissima and its palaces.
