Alentejo coast: Porto Covo to Milfontes. The northern stretch starts among cork forests and horse farms inland from Santiago do Cacém, then meets the sea at the blue-and-white village of Porto Covo, opposite the island of Pessegueiro. Sandy roads lead south to Vila Nova de Milfontes on the Mira estuary.
Cabo Sardão to Odeceixe. The most dramatic cliffs of the coast: the lonely Cabo Sardão lighthouse, where storks nest on sea stacks, the surf town of Zambujeira do Mar and the beaches of Carvalhal and Azenhas do Mar. The Seixe river at Odeceixe marks the border with the Algarve — its beach, where the river meets the ocean, is one of the most photographed in Portugal.
Aljezur, Carrapateira and Sagres. South of the border the coast turns wilder still: the 10th-century Moorish castle of Aljezur, the Fisherman's Museum in Carrapateira and the restored village of Pedralva. Mostly flat dirt tracks then run to Cape St. Vincent and the sea-facing fortress of Sagres.
Into the Algarve. From Sagres the cliffs change from black schist to orange sandstone as you ride east to Lagos and the rock arches of Ponta da Piedade — the finish of most Costa Vicentina tours.

Where is the Costa Vicentina?
The Costa Vicentina (often written Vicentine Coast in English) is Portugal's wild south-west Atlantic shoreline, running from Porto Covo in the Alentejo down to Cape St. Vincent at the tip of the Algarve. Most of it lies inside the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, which keeps it free of high-rise development: cliffs, empty surf beaches, fishing villages and small towns like Vila Nova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe and Aljezur.
Is the Costa Vicentina hard to cycle?
It is moderate rather than flat. Expect short, frequent climbs where the road drops into river valleys and climbs back onto the cliffs, and a mix of quiet paved roads and compact dirt tracks. Daily stages on our tours run 35-70 km with 250-850 m of climbing. An e-bike makes every itinerary comfortable, and paved alternatives exist for most off-road sections.
What is the best time to cycle the Vicentine Coast?
April to June and September to October are ideal: 18-26 °C, green hills in spring, warm sea in autumn and quiet beaches. July and August are rideable thanks to the Atlantic breeze but busier, and some stretches are exposed to wind. Winter is mild, but many small hotels close and ferries and services run reduced timetables.
Is the Rota Vicentina the same as a bike tour?
The Rota Vicentina is a network of walking trails (the Fishermen's Trail and the Historical Way). Cyclists do not ride the Fishermen's Trail, which is sand and cliff path for walkers only. Bike tours follow quiet parallel roads and tracks through the same natural park, reaching the same villages, lighthouses and beaches — Cabo Sardão, Zambujeira, Odeceixe, Carrapateira and Cape St. Vincent.
Can I combine the Costa Vicentina with the Algarve?
Yes, and most tours do. The Costa Vicentina ends at Cape St. Vincent and Sagres, where the Algarve begins, so itineraries naturally continue east to Lagos and its Ponta da Piedade rock arches. The Wild Algarve tour goes further, to the Ria Formosa lagoon and Tavira near the Spanish border.
How do I get to the start of a Costa Vicentina bike tour?
Lisbon is the main gateway: the Lisbon-to-Lagos tours start in Palmela or with a transfer to Santiago do Cacém, both under two hours from the airport. For tours starting in Odeceixe, Faro airport is about 1h30 by car. Lagos and Tavira, where most tours end, have direct train links back to Faro and Lisbon.
