Wild Algarve Cycling Tour
Costa Vicentina / Southwest Alentejo / Algarve
Short Description
Discover the wild southwest of Portugal on a self-guided cycling journey that begins on the Costa Vicentina and the Southwest Alentejo before finishing in the sun-warmed eastern Algarve. Rugged cliffs, hidden coves and quiet coastal roads set the rhythm of each day. You will ride from Atlantic headlands to the calm lagoons of the Ria Formosa, pausing at Cape St. Vincent, historic fortresses and the Fisherman's Museum along the way. Between the pedalling, you will meet the people who keep the coast's traditions alive, with a visit to an organic farm and a local pastry factory. Swim in crystal-blue water, uncover secluded beaches and sleep in charming hotels and restored villages with swimming pools. Short climbs and gentle ups and downs turn every stage into a satisfying challenge, perfect for active travellers seeking adventure, culture and the very best of Portugal's coast.

🙋 Common questions
What is the difficulty level of this tour?
This is a medium-level tour covering roughly 250 km over six cycling days, with daily stages of 34 to 46 km on a mix of asphalt and dirt tracks. Climbs are short but frequent, with per-day ascents of 150 to 550 metres. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and an e-bike is available for extra assistance.
Is this a guided or self-guided tour?
This is a self-guided tour. You ride independently at your own pace using a personalised navigation app and detailed route notes, with your luggage transferred between hotels and local telephone assistance available should you need help along the way.
What type of bike is provided?
The route is designed for a hybrid or trekking bike suited to mixed asphalt and dirt-track terrain. An e-bike is available on request and is a comfortable option for the short climbs. Bike rental is booked as a supplement and is not included in the base package price.
What kind of accommodation is included?
You will stay in charming hotels and restored villages, several with swimming pools, in double rooms with breakfast. Two hotel categories are available: a Standard charm selection and a Superior premium selection with higher-end properties. Single rooms are available with a supplement.
When is the best time to travel?
Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for cycling in southern Portugal. Summer is possible but can be very hot on the exposed coastal stretches, so early starts and plenty of water are advised during July and August.
