Short Description

Cycle through the medieval heart of Dordogne on this 7-night self-guided tour from Sarlat. You will ride quiet roads and greenways past the sacred cliff-top city of Rocamadour, the prehistoric caves of Lascaux, and the world capital of prehistory at Les Eyzies. The route winds through the Dordogne and Vézère valleys, linking castles at Beynac and Castelnaud with some of France's most beautiful villages before returning to Sarlat, the gastronomic jewel of the Périgord Noir.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Sarlat
Arrive in Sarlat, one of the jewels of the Périgord Noir and a classified City of Art and History. Built around a great Benedictine abbey in the ninth century, its narrow streets, vaulted passages, cathedral, and fifteenth-century mansions will set the tone for your journey.

Day 2: Sarlat – Souillac (30 km; +160 m)
Spend the morning exploring medieval Sarlat before setting off on a gentle greenway traced along an old railway line in the Dordogne Valley, leading you to the pleasant town of Souillac.

Day 3: Souillac – Rocamadour – Souillac (42 km; +750 m)
A spectacular loop takes you along the Dordogne to Lacave, then climbs to the sacred city of Rocamadour, clinging to a sheer cliff 120 metres above the Alzou canyon with the UNESCO-listed Basilica of Saint-Sauveur and the Black Virgin.

Day 4: Souillac – Tamnies (38 km; +400 m)
Discover the quieter Périgord with an optional detour to the Jardins d'Eyrignac. Continue through Salignac with its medieval castle and Saint-Géniès with its lauze-roofed church.

Day 5: Tamnies – Les Eyzies (41 km; +640 m)
Ride to Montignac, gateway to the famous Lascaux cave. Follow the Vézère valley through Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère and the Roque Saint-Christophe to Les Eyzies, the world capital of prehistory.

Day 6: Les Eyzies – Siorac or Saint-Cyprien (46 km; +330 m)
Continue along the Vézère to the panoramic gardens of Limeuil, Cadouin's UNESCO-listed abbey, then follow the Dordogne to your overnight stop.

Day 7: Saint-Cyprien – Sarlat (42 km; +350 m)
Cycle past Les Milandes, Castelnaud, Beynac, and La Roque-Gageac along the Dordogne back to Sarlat.

Day 8: Departure
Departure after breakfast.
