Short Description

Cycle from Bordeaux to Sarlat-la-Canéda through the Dordogne Valley on this 7-day self-guided cycling tour in Southwest France. Ride past the UNESCO vineyards of Saint-Émilion, the wine villages of Bergerac and Monbazillac, and finish in the medieval capital of Périgord Noir with its prehistoric treasures.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Bordeaux
You will arrive at your 3 or 4-star hotel in central Bordeaux, where you will collect your road book and bicycle. The rest of the day is free to explore this UNESCO World Heritage city, stroll along the Garonne riverbanks and admire the Place de la Bourse.

Day 2: Bordeaux – Saint-Émilion (50 km; +260 m)
You will ride through the majestic Place de la Bourse and along the quays before crossing the Pont de Pierre. You will then join the Roger Lapébie cycle track, a scenic greenway through the Entre-Deux-Mers region. The route passes through Créon, a typical bastide village, before ending in Saint-Émilion with its world-famous vineyards and medieval architecture.

Day 3: Saint-Émilion – Sainte-Foy-la-Grande (41 km; +70 m)
You will ride through the 5,000-hectare UNESCO-listed vineyards of Saint-Émilion, then continue to the historic town of Castillon-la-Bataille. Following the Dordogne River, you will reach Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, the oldest bastide in the Gironde, founded in 1255, with its remarkable 16th-century carved wood facades.

Day 4: Sainte-Foy-la-Grande – Bergerac (37 km; +200 m)
You will pedal through the Pays Foyen countryside to Monbazillac and its elegant château perched above the Dordogne Valley. The day ends in Bergerac, a designated City of Art and History, where you will stroll along the quays and admire the half-timbered houses of the 15th and 16th centuries.

Day 5: Bergerac – Les Eyzies (63 km; +380 m)
You will follow the Lalinde canal cycle track along charming villages before turning up the Vézère tributary into the Black Périgord. The stage ends in Les Eyzies, the world capital of prehistory where Cro-Magnon man was discovered, surrounded by UNESCO-listed prehistoric cave art sites.

Day 6: Les Eyzies – Sarlat-la-Canéda (25–47 km; +400–650 m)
You will have two options for the final cycling day. The longer route follows the Vézère Valley past prehistoric sites to the famous Caves of Lascaux before descending to Sarlat. The direct route takes you straight to Sarlat through scenic countryside. Sarlat-la-Canéda is the gastronomic capital of Périgord Noir, renowned for foie gras, truffles and medieval architecture.
