🙋 Common questions
Which harbour does this Aeolian Islands tour start from?
It depends on the ship. The Sundial sails from Milazzo, on the north-east coast of Sicily; the Tersane IV sails from Capo d'Orlando Marina, about 60 km further west along the same coast. Both are round trips, so you disembark where you started. Your booking confirmation names the ship and the harbour: check it before booking travel.
How difficult is cycling in the Aeolian Islands?
The operator grades this tour 3 out of 5. Cycling days are short, between 15 and 25 km, but the terrain is hilly to mountainous with roughly 120 to 245 metres of climbing a day. You will need to handle longer, steep climbs, although you are free to push the bike. Most roads are asphalted and rarely busy.
When is the best time to cycle in the Aeolian Islands?
Departures run from late spring to early autumn. May, June and September bring warm sea temperatures with air temperatures that stay comfortable on the bike, while high summer is hotter and busier across the islands. Late spring and early autumn are also the calmest periods for sailing between the islands.
How much does a boat and bike tour of the Aeolian Islands cost?
Prices start from €2099 per person and vary by departure date, ship and cabin type; live availability is shown on this page. The price covers seven nights on board with breakfast, packed lunches, six dinners, an English-speaking tour leader, fully guided cycling and walking tours, and harbour charges. An e-bike can be rented for €273 per week.
Is this tour guided or self-guided?
It is fully guided. An English-speaking tour leader accompanies the group on every cycling and walking excursion and explains what you encounter along the way. If you prefer to ride at your own pace, a detailed cycling map and the Ride with GPS app are available on board, and the tour leader stays reachable by phone for questions, breakdowns or emergencies.
What kind of boat do you sleep on in the Aeolian Islands?
You sleep on board a caique, a traditional wooden fishing boat converted for cruising. Both ships used on this tour, the Tersane IV and the Sundial, carry a maximum of twelve guests in six air-conditioned cabins, with bed linen, towels and daily cabin cleaning. The ship moves between the islands while you cycle or overnight.
Can I bring my own bicycle on this tour?
No. Neither ship has deck space for guests' own bicycles or e-bikes, so bringing your own is not possible on this tour. Bicycles are supplied on board. An e-bike can be rented for €273 per bike per week, and an optional damage liability limitation costs €35 per week, bookable in advance only.
How much walking is there on this Sicily boat and bike tour?
Two of the eight days are walking days rather than cycling days. Day four includes a 3.5-hour guided walk up Stromboli to 400 metres to see the volcano at dusk, with the descent after dark, so a head torch from home is essential. Day five is a 2.5-hour walk on Panarea to the village, Drautto beach and Cala Junco.
How do I reach the harbour for the start of the tour?
Both Milazzo and Capo d'Orlando Marina are on the north coast of Sicily and are reached by train or bus from the Sicilian airports; Catania and Palermo are the usual arrival points. Transfers to and from the docking place are not included, although private transfers can be arranged on request.
