🙋 Common questions
How difficult is cycling in the Dutch Wadden Islands?
This tour covers between 28 and 58 km on cycling days, on flat island, polder and dike roads. Most days offer a shorter and a longer route, and two tour leaders ride with two separate groups at different paces. Wind, rather than gradient, is the main effort here. E-bikes are available for rent.
When is the best time to cycle in the Netherlands and the Wadden Sea?
The season runs from spring to early autumn. May and June bring long daylight and nesting birds across the Wadden, while late summer and September are quieter and often steadier for sailing. Departures are limited in number and the available dates are shown live on this page under Availability.
How much does a boat and bike tour in the Netherlands cost?
This 8-day guided tour starts from €1539 per person, with the exact price depending on departure date and cabin type and shown live under Availability. The price includes seven nights on board with breakfast, packed lunches, six three-course dinners, two tour leaders, and the visits to Ecomare and the Eise Eisinga Planetarium.
Is this tour guided or self-guided?
It is fully guided. Two tour leaders ride with two separate groups, so faster and slower cyclists are equally comfortable, and daily briefings on board explain the route ahead. Some short walking tours are also led by the guides, including the evening walk through the old harbour town of Medemblik.
What ship do you sail on in the Wadden Sea?
You sail on the Leafde fan Fryslân, a four-mast schooner with twenty cabins for a maximum of thirty-eight guests, air conditioning, upper-deck suites and a jacuzzi on deck. Cabins are climate-controlled and cleaned daily, and bed linen and towels are provided. The ship moves while you cycle or sail, so you unpack once for the week.
Do I need sailing experience for a sail and bike tour?
No. The crew sails the ship, and passages are made fully rigged whenever the wind allows. If you would like to help hoist the sails or take the helm you are welcome to do so, but it is entirely up to you and no previous sailing experience is required.
Do I need to bring my own bicycle?
No. A premium hybrid bicycle can be rented for €154 per week and a premium e-bike for €287 per week; e-bikes are limited in number and available on request, so reserving at the time of booking is recommended. If you prefer your own bike, a parking place on board costs €14 per week, or €35 with a charging point for an e-bike.
Can the itinerary change during the tour?
Yes, and on a sail and bike tour that is normal. Embarkation and disembarkation in Enkhuizen are fixed, but the daily sailing route depends on wind strength and direction and, on the Wadden Sea, on the tides. The skipper decides the best route each day and discusses the options with guests, so times and even the order of the programme may be adjusted.
