Short Description

The heart of Corsica beats in its mountains — ancient forests of towering Lariccio pines, gorges carved into red granite, passes that open onto vast panoramas of lakes and peaks, and villages where time stands still. This central chapter of the GT20 takes you from the azure citadel of Calvi deep into the island's wild interior, through some of the most spectacular and unspoilt landscapes in the entire Mediterranean. You will ride along the Gulf of Galéria, past the former pirate refuge of Girolata, through the UNESCO-listed Calanques de Piana with their otherworldly red rock formations, and into the majestic Aïtone forest before crossing the Vergio Pass — the highest point on the GT20. The journey ends in Corte, the historic mountain capital of Corsica, perched dramatically above the Restonica gorge. With five cycling stages that range from gentle coastal rides to one serious mountain day, this tour rewards adventurous cyclists with a side of Corsica most visitors never see.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Calvi
You will arrive in Calvi, the jewel of Corsica's northwest coast. Explore the Genoese citadel perched on its rocky promontory, wander the harbour streets and take in the exceptional views of the Mediterranean Sea — your starting point for a journey into the wild interior.

Day 2: Calvi – Galéria (40 km; +314 m / −309 m)
You will leave Calvi on a road that climbs gently through the maquis, offering superb views of the sea below. The landscape turns increasingly wild — mountains, dense vegetation and small streams accompany you. The last section descends toward the Gulf of Galéria, where a quiet village nestled between sea and river awaits, perfect for a swim after the ride.

Day 3: Galéria – Porto (50 km; +578 m / −550 m)
You will climb into the mountains toward the Palmarella Pass, where an exceptional panorama unfolds over the Gulf of Girolata — a former pirate hideout embraced by sea and maquis. After the Col de la Croix, the road plunges through spectacular gorges of red cliffs and wild vegetation before descending to Porto and the waterfront at La Marine.

Day 4: Porto – Piana – Porto (25 km round trip)
You will ride toward the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of towering red rock formations that contrast magnificently with the green maquis and the deep blue sea below. The charming village of Piana sits in the heart of this geological wonderland. You will return to Porto on the same road, seeing these extraordinary formations from a completely different perspective.

Day 5: Porto – Calacuccia (50 km; +1592 m / −829 m)
The queen stage of the tour. You will cross the spectacular Spelunca Gorges, pass through Évisa — the chestnut capital — and enter the majestic Aïtone forest of Lariccio pines, beeches and chestnuts. The road climbs to the Vergio Pass, the highest point on the GT20, where a magnificent panorama opens over the Niolu valley and Lake Calacuccia nestled among the peaks.

Day 6: Calacuccia – Corte (30 km; +308 m / −698 m)
A gentler final stage takes you out of the Niolu valley on a winding road through pine forests and craggy rocks, alongside the Golo — Corsica's longest river — and through its steep gorges. As the terrain softens, Corte appears ahead: the historic mountain capital, perched dramatically above the valley, crowned by its medieval citadel.

Day 7: Departure from Corte
Your mountain adventure ends after breakfast. Transfers to Bastia airport can be arranged on request.
