This is an easy to moderate tour. Most stages follow the gently descending Drava River, with daily distances between 34 and 59 km. The Lake Millstatt round tour on Day 4 is a relaxed loop. The route is well-signposted and suitable for recreational cyclists.

What type of accommodation is provided?

You will stay in good 3-star and 4-star hotels and family-run guesthouses. Daily breakfast buffet or extended breakfast is included. Half board with five 3-course dinners can be added for €148 per person.

How does the train ride on Day 2 work?

From Lienz, you take the Drau Valley Railway to Sillian (hourly service, approximately 37 minutes, approx. €15 payable on site). You then cycle the scenic downhill section back past Lienz. Alternatively, you can skip the train and ride directly from Lienz (28 km).

Is the return transfer included?

Yes. From 2027 the return journey by train is included every day: public transport on this route is largely free thanks to the Carinthian guest card you receive with the mandatory local tax. Trains run e.g. from Kühnsdorf-Klopeiner See at approx. 9:13 to Lienz at approx. 12:16 (1 change). Getting to the station is up to you — e.g. the shuttle St. Kanzian–Kühnsdorf costs approx. €2 per person, payable on site. Alternatively, a bus transfer runs every Saturday for €84 per person.

Yes. On the train you take your bike with you. On the Saturday bus, transport of your own bike costs €40 and must be booked in advance.

Ride the Drava Cycle Path from Lienz through Carinthia's lake district, circling Lake Millstatt, exploring Villach and the Rosental valley, to finish at warm Lake Klopein. Eight days of gentle cycling with castles, abbeys and Alpine scenery, return train included. From €969 pp.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Lienz
You will arrive in the sunny town of Lienz, the gateway to East Tyrol. Parking, subject to availability, at the hotel or at the public car parks at the station (Ladestraße) or the Dolomitenstadion (approx. €24 per week), payable on site. Your rental bikes, if booked, will be ready at the hotel.

Day 2: Lienz – Oberdrauburg/Berg im Drautal (58 km bike + 37 min train)
You will take the Drau Valley Railway to Sillian (hourly service, approx. €15 payable on site) and then follow the Drava Cycle Path gently downhill on beautiful, peaceful sections past Lienz to your destination. Alternatively, you can cycle directly from Lienz (28 km).

Day 3: Oberdrauburg – Millstatt/Spittal (59 km)
The route leads to Greifenburg and past Neustein Castle. Passing Raggnitz Castle, you will reach Spittal an der Drau with its magnificent Porcia Castle, or nearby Millstatt with its historic abbey.

Day 4: Lake Millstatt Round Tour (34 km)
Today you will enjoy a scenic loop around Carinthia's second-largest lake. The route takes you through Dellach, Döbriach, Großegg and Seeboden, with stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Day 5: Millstatt/Spittal – Villach (42 km)
Passing Rothenthurn Castle to Paternion, you will ride flat and beautifully along the Drava River to Villach. Explore the historic centre, the Church of the Holy Spirit, the parish tower, and the doll and vehicle museum.

Day 6: Villach – Ferlach/Kirschentheuer (52 km)
You will follow the Drava River past Rosegg Castle with Austria's most diverse wildlife park and the Celtic World of Frög. Through the enchanting Rosental valley, past the pilgrimage church of Maria Elend and the Ferlach Reservoir to the gunsmith town of Ferlach.

Day 7: Ferlach – Lake Klopein (43 km)
Your final stage leads through an idyllic landscape to Gallizien and past Neudenstein Castle. You will ride to Völkermarkt with its parish church and old town hall, then along quiet side roads to reach Lake Klopein.

Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, your tour ends. The return journey to Lienz by train is included (daily, 1 change); a bus transfer is available on Saturdays at extra cost. Or extend your stay with additional nights.
