This is an easy to moderate tour with daily distances of around 32 to 40 km along coastal paths, quiet roads and greenways. The terrain is gently rolling rather than mountainous, making it suitable for cyclists with a basic level of fitness. An e-bike option is available for added comfort.

This is the coastal variation of the Portuguese Way, following the Atlantic shore through Caminha, Baiona and the Rías Baixas before turning inland to Santiago. It is a more recently recognised official Camino and is generally gentler and more seaside-focused than the historic inland central route.

What type of accommodation is provided?

You will stay in comfortable, well-located hotels, all with breakfast included. On request, four nights can be upgraded to historic Paradores in Baiona, Pontevedra, Cambados and Santiago — landmark hotels set in castles, palaces and stately homes.

What bikes are available?

A standard touring bike is included in the price. E-bikes are available as an optional supplement. All rentals come with the usual equipment such as pannier bag, lock and repair kit.

Is luggage transfer included?

Yes. Your luggage is transferred between hotels on every cycling day, so you only ride with a light daypack.

When is the best time to ride this tour?

The route runs across the Portuguese and Galician coast in spring, summer and autumn. Late spring and early autumn offer mild temperatures and quieter roads, while summer brings warm days ideal for the beaches and estuaries along the way.

Breakfast is included every day. Lunches and dinners are not included, but optional seafood Wine & Dine packages and wine tastings in the Albariño region can be added on request.

Short Description

An 8-day self-guided cycling tour from Porto to Santiago de Compostela along the Atlantic Coastal Way — the seaward variation of the Portuguese Camino, now an officially recognised route to the cathedral. You will ride past fishing harbours, golden beaches and the green estuaries of the Rías Baixas, through Caminha, Baiona, Pontevedra and Cambados, in the heart of Albariño wine country. Gentle daily distances of around 32–40 km, comfortable hotels, daily luggage transfer and the option to upgrade four nights to historic Paradores.

Tour Program

Day 1: Porto
You will arrive in Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage city whose historic centre holds more than 150 listed monuments. Wander the riverside lanes along the Douro, admire the Clérigos church and tower and the Bolsa Palace, and step inside the Lello bookshop, said to hold one of the most beautiful staircases in Europe.

Day 2: Porto – Caminha (38–62 km)
With the Atlantic as your guide, you will pedal northwards on quiet paths past fishing villages unchanged for centuries. Before reaching Caminha you will pass through Viana do Castelo, a town shaped by shipbuilding and the sea. Welcome to the Minho, where green wine and tradition go hand in hand.

Day 3: Caminha – Baiona (38 km)
You will leave Portugal and cross into Spain, following the Atlantic coast below the Sierra de Argallo to the lively harbour town of Baiona, famous for its fresh fish and seafood. Stroll the walls of the Monterreal fort or watch the sunset over the ocean with a glass of Galician white wine.

Day 4: Baiona – Pontevedra (32 km)
You will ride through the lush inland waterways of the Rías Baixas, along the Louro valley and pine forests, with captivating views where the ocean flows inland. You will pass through Arcade, the oyster capital of Galicia, before reaching the elegant old town of Pontevedra on the River Lérez.

Day 5: Pontevedra – Cambados (32 km)
Cycling towards the Atlantic, you will cross the extensive vineyards of the Albariño region, where the green of the fields meets the crystalline blue of the Arousa estuary. Cambados, your destination, is a town of fishing architecture and rich seafood cuisine.

Day 6: Cambados – Carril (39 km)
Today the Ría de Arousa sets the scene, through typical fishing villages renowned for their mussels and seafood. There is time for a swim on a white sand beach, a kayak trip, or a walk on the island that holds the largest laurel forest in Europe.

Day 7: Carril – Santiago de Compostela
The final stage carries you inland to Santiago de Compostela. As you approach, you will feel the quiet thrill that pilgrims have known for centuries on reaching this great sanctuary. Do not miss the cathedral — a place of history, devotion and hope.

Day 8: Departure
Your tour ends after breakfast in Santiago de Compostela.
