Chiang Rai & the Golden Triangle
Northern Thailand & the Golden Triangle
Short Description
This eight-day loop from Chiang Rai pushes deep into one of the wildest and most beautiful corners of northern Thailand. From tea-covered hillsides to hilltribe villages and the banks of the Mekong at the heart of the Golden Triangle, every stage reveals a different face of the region. This is a tour for riders who love the mountains. The roads are mostly paved, the climbing is serious — the queen stage to Phu Chi Fa alone gains over 2,000 metres — and the descents and panoramas reward every effort. A support vehicle follows each stage, so you can push hard or ease off, with harder alternative routes waiting in the app for those who want more. You will ride past golden temples and royal gardens, cross the Thai-Burmese border market at Mae Sai, and finish with a boat trip on the Mekong before returning to Chiang Rai and its famous White Temple.

🙋 Common questions
How difficult is this tour?
This is a challenging mountain tour: six cycling days, 436 km and around 6,340 m of total climbing. The queen stage to Phu Chi Fa alone gains 2,190 m. It suits fit, active cyclists comfortable on mountain roads. A support vehicle follows every stage and can carry you over the hardest climb if needed.
What kind of bike is provided?
Quality road or hybrid bikes are included, supported on every stage. An e-bike can be booked as an optional supplement — a real help given the elevation. Harder alternative routes are available each day in the LocalRoutes app for riders who want an extra challenge.
When can I do this tour and what is the best season?
The tour is self-guided with flexible start dates. Northern Thailand's cool, dry season — roughly November to February — is the most comfortable for the mountain stages, with clearer air and cooler climbs.
What type of accommodation is used?
You stay seven nights in selected hotels and resorts in twin or double rooms, including a spa resort and a mountain camp at Phu Chi Fa. Breakfast is included from Day 2 to Day 7.
Is there support along the way?
Yes. A support vehicle accompanies every stage, luggage is transferred between hotels, and the LocalRoutes team is reachable by phone seven days a week. You ride with freedom while keeping a safety net in place.
How do I get there and back?
Fly in and out of Chiang Rai. The tour is a loop that begins and ends in the city. Airport transfers to and from your hotel are not included but can be arranged.
What is not included?
International flights and airport taxes, airport transfers, most lunches and dinners, drinks, travel insurance, site entrance fees (such as Doi Tung) and tips are not included.
