🙋 Common questions
How difficult is cycling along the Rhine and Moselle?
Boat Bike Tours rates this tour difficulty level 1: easy, on very flat terrain. Cycling days range from 20 to 45 km on riverside cycle paths, and only the optional long route on day 3 involves real climbing, at gradients of up to five per cent. E-bikes can be rented for those who want extra assistance.
When is the best time to cycle the Rhine and Moselle valleys?
The season runs from late March to late October. May and June bring long daylight and green vineyards, while September and early October coincide with the harvest on the Moselle's steep slopes, when the wine villages are at their liveliest. High summer is warm and busier in Rüdesheim and Cochem.
How much does a boat and bike tour on the Rhine and Moselle cost?
Prices start from €999 per person and vary by departure date, ship and cabin type; live availability is shown on this page. The price covers seven nights on board with breakfast, packed lunches, seven three-course dinners, the semi-guided cycling programme and a guided city tour of Mainz. Bike rental costs €91 per week, an e-bike €252.
Is this Rhine and Moselle tour guided or self-guided?
It is semi-guided. You cycle independently and at your own pace using the cycling map, the route notes and the GPS tracks provided, while a tour leader rides the same route each day and stays reachable by phone for questions, breakdowns or emergencies. Daily briefings on board explain the stage ahead.
Where do you sleep on a boat and bike tour in Germany?
You sleep on board in a climate-controlled cabin, with bed linen and towels provided and the cabin cleaned daily. The ship moves to a new mooring almost every day, so you unpack once for the whole week and still wake up somewhere different. Two ships operate this route: the Arkona and the Veloria.
Do I need to bring my own bicycle?
No. A rental bicycle costs €91 per week and an e-bike €252 per week; e-bikes are available on request only and in limited numbers, so book early. If you prefer your own bike, parking on board costs €14 per week, or €28 with a charging point for an e-bike. Helmets can be rented for €10.
Can I skip a cycling day and stay on board?
Yes. On any day you are welcome to stay on the ship and relax while it cruises to the next landing place. On several stages there is also a choice between a shorter and a longer route, though the shorter option may not take in all the highlights described in the programme.
How do I get to Koblenz for the start of the tour?
Koblenz sits on the main Rhine rail line, with direct connections from Cologne, Frankfurt and Mainz; the nearest large airports are Frankfurt and Cologne/Bonn. Embarkation is at 2 p.m. on day 1, and luggage can be left on board from 11 a.m. Travel to and from Koblenz is not included.
