Short Description

Northern Sardinia unfolds like a secret kept by the Mediterranean — turquoise waters, granite peaks, and ancient towns connected by quiet roads that seem made for cycling. This self-guided tour will take you from the glamorous Costa Smeralda all the way to the fortified city of Alghero, crossing some of the most striking landscapes the island has to offer. You will begin in Cannigione, gateway to the Costa Smeralda, where the jet set meets the wild beauty of Gallura. From here, you will loop through the legendary beaches and inlets of Porto Cervo and Baia Sardinia, then take the ferry to the La Maddalena archipelago — a national park of granite islands surrounded by crystal-clear seas. The ride continues inland through the hills and lakes around Tempio Pausania and Sant'Antonio di Gallura, before dropping back to the coast at the medieval fortress town of Castelsardo. The final stages will carry you through the rolling hills of Anglona and the pastures around Sassari, Sardinia's second-largest city, before a peaceful ride along backroads leads you to Alghero — a Catalan gem perched on the sea, arguably the most charming town on the island. With daily rides between 39 and 60 km on quiet country roads, this is a tour that balances coastal splendour with authentic inland Sardinia.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Cannigione
You will arrive independently in Cannigione, the gateway to the Costa Smeralda. Settle into your hotel and take in the views of the bay — your cycling adventure through northern Sardinia begins tomorrow.

Day 2: Costa Smeralda Loop (54 km)
You will discover the beauties of the fabled Costa Smeralda. The ride takes you up into the hills of San Pantaleo and down to the jet set of Porto Cervo, along the turquoise inlets of Baia Sardinia, and back to Cannigione. This is the Emerald Coast at its finest — exclusive yet wild, glamorous yet quietly natural.

Day 3: La Maddalena Archipelago (60 km)
From Cannigione you will ride along the coast to Palau, where the ferry takes you to the vibrant town of La Maddalena. You will cross the bridge to Caprera, home of the Garibaldi museum, and cycle back through Palau to Cannigione. An island day of granite shores, turquoise water, and maritime history.

Day 4: Cannigione – Tempio Pausania (51 km)
Today you will venture inland to Arzachena and up into the hills and lakes of Sant'Antonio di Gallura, through the cork oak forests and granite landscapes of Calangianus, and finally up to Tempio Pausania. The terrain shifts from coastal to mountainous — a dramatic change of scenery.

Day 5: Tempio Pausania – Castelsardo (49 km)
From Tempio Pausania you will ride to Aggius, through the dramatic Valle della Luna — a landscape of wind-sculpted granite boulders that feels almost otherworldly — and back to the coast, arriving in Castelsardo. This medieval fortress town, perched high above the sea, is one of Sardinia's most photogenic spots.

Day 6: Castelsardo – Sassari (55 km)
You will ride along the coast to Lu Bagnu and then head inland again to Nulvi and Osilo, enjoying the spectacular views of the Anglona rolling hills and pastures. The day ends in Sassari, Sardinia's second-largest city, rich in history and local traditions.

Day 7: Sassari – Alghero (39 km)
From Sassari you will ride along quiet backroads to reach Alghero, the fortified town on the northwest coast. With its Catalan heritage, cobbled streets, and golden sea walls, Alghero is arguably the most charming town in Sardinia — and the perfect finale to your northern ride.

Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, your services come to an end. Depart from Alghero with memories of turquoise seas, granite mountains, and the warm hospitality of northern Sardinia.
