🙋 Common questions
How difficult is cycling along the Old Salt Road in northern Germany?
This tour covers between 25 and 64 km on cycling days, on the flat terrain typical of the Elbe valley and the Baltic hinterland. Most days offer a shorter and a longer option, so you can adjust the effort day by day. A rental e-bike is available on request for those who prefer extra assistance.
When is the best time to cycle between Hamburg and Lübeck?
The season runs from spring to early autumn. May and June bring long daylight hours and mild temperatures, while September is quieter both on the cycle paths and in the old towns. Northern Germany rarely gets very hot, so a light rain jacket is more useful than heat protection.
How much does a boat and bike tour from Hamburg cost?
This 8-day tour starts from €1,199 per person. Prices vary by departure date and cabin type, and live availability is shown on this page. The price includes seven nights on board with breakfast, a daily packed lunch, seven three-course dinners, the Salt Museum entrance and the guided tour of Lübeck. A rental bicycle costs €98 per week.
Is this tour guided or self-guided?
It is semi-guided. You cycle independently using the BBT route maps and GPS tracks, while a tour leader rides the same route each day and is available along the way. Daily briefings on board explain the stage ahead, and in Lübeck a local guide leads an included city tour on foot.
Where do you sleep on a boat and bike tour in northern Germany?
You sleep on board in an air-conditioned cabin, with bed linen and towels provided and daily cabin cleaning. The ship moves while you cycle or overnight, so you unpack once for the whole week and still change destination almost every day.
Do I need to bring my own bicycle?
No. A rental bicycle can be booked for €98 per week and a rental e-bike for €273 per week; e-bike numbers are limited and available on request only, so reserving at the time of booking is recommended. If you prefer your own bike, parking on board costs €14 per week, or €35 with a charging point for an e-bike.
What is the Old Salt Road?
The Old Salt Road is the historic trade route that carried salt from Lüneburg to the Baltic ports of northern Germany. For centuries this salt, known as white gold, made the fortunes of Lüneburg and Lübeck and underpinned the power of the Hanseatic League. The cycling route follows the same corridor of rivers, canals and towns.
Can I skip a cycling day?
Yes. If you would rather not cycle on a given day you are welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship cruises to the next mooring. Distances in the programme are approximate, and on the shorter route options you may not reach every highlight mentioned for that stage.
