Around the Scenic Little Belt

Day 1: Arrival in Middelfart
Welcome to the starting point of your Little Belt adventure. You will find Middelfart beautifully set on the west coast of Fyn, where the harbor invites a leisurely stroll. You might visit the Clay Museum of Ceramic Art or experience the thrill of bridge-walking on the Old Little Belt Bridge. Several local history museums are also well worth exploring.

Day 2: Middelfart – Christiansfeld (54 km)
The Old Little Belt Bridge will carry you from Fyn to Jutland, passing the deer in Hindsgavl Deer Park along the way. If the weather is right, a refreshing dip in the Little Belt at Skærbæk awaits. You will then reach Kolding, where the imposing Koldinghus — a castle over 750 years old and once one of Denmark's most important royal palaces — is well worth a visit. The day ends in Christiansfeld, a unique town founded by the Moravian Church in 1772 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.

Day 3: Christiansfeld – Aabenraa (47 km)
Before leaving Christiansfeld, you will want to taste the town's famous honey cake, a tradition dating back to 1783. The route follows National Cycle Route 8 towards Haderslev, where the impressive cathedral perched on the town's highest point deserves a visit. You might also take an excursion boat trip on Haderslev Dam or stroll through the charming streets. The ride continues to Aabenraa, a historic port town nestled at the foot of its namesake fjord, with a trading and seafaring heritage stretching back to the 12th century.

Day 4: Aabenraa – Sønderborg (51 km)
You will cycle through the Danish-German borderlands, where building styles and language reveal centuries of shared influence. Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Brundlund Castle Art Museum. The route follows National Cycle Route 8 towards the Flensburg Fjord — a perfect spot for a swim on a warm day. At Gråsten, a small detour leads to the beautiful gardens of the royal Gråsten Castle. Just before Sønderborg, you will pass Dybbøl Mill and the history center telling the story of the 1864 war. You will arrive on the island of Als via King Christian X's Bridge over the Alssund.

Day 5: Sønderborg (excursion day, 58 km)
Sønderborg is an exciting town steeped in over 850 years of history. You will find Sønderborg Castle well worth visiting for a journey through Danish and regional history. Alternatively, an excursion ride along National Cycle Route 5 takes you to a ferry back to Als, where Universe Science Park near Nordborg offers a fun stop before returning via Augustenborg to Sønderborg.

Day 6: Sønderborg – Assens (57 km)
The morning ride leads to Augustenborg, where you can explore the castle park once frequented by Hans Christian Andersen himself. From the port of Fynshav, a scenic ferry crossing brings you to Bøjden on Fyn. Once on the island, the route winds through the outskirts of the Svanninge Hills — known as the "Alps of Fyn" — with an optional detour to the charming port town of Falsled. You will cycle around Helnæs Bay to your destination south of Assens, with views of the Little Belt from the eastern side.

Day 7: Assens – Middelfart (58 km)
National Cycle Route 8 takes you into Assens, where the charming streets and the local brunsviger pastry await. The quirky "Ernst" exhibition — a silverware manufacturer's antique collection with a beautiful Italian-inspired garden — makes for a memorable visit. The final stretch follows the Little Belt coastline, offering several swimming spots along the way, including Føns Strand. You will complete the full loop as you arrive back in Middelfart.

Day 8: Departure
Your cycling holiday around the Little Belt comes to an end. You may choose to extend your stay with a few extra days exploring Odense or Copenhagen.
