Short Description

Cycle the Coast of Green Spain on this 8-day self-guided tour through Cantabria. You will ride past medieval villages, hidden coves, and the golden beaches of Somo, with the Picos de Europa rising in the distance on free days you can pace as you like.

Tour Program

Day 1: Arrival in Santillana del Mar
You will be picked up from your arrival point and transferred to the medieval village of Santillana del Mar. After an introduction to your bike and a route briefing, the rest of the day is yours: wander the cobbled streets of the village, visit the Altamira Caves museum, or take a first easy ride along the country lanes down to the coast.

Day 2: Santillana del Mar – San Vicente de la Barquera (36–62 km)
You will ride west through green meadows, hills, and unspoilt coastline. Novales sits amid lemon groves, and Comillas welcomes you with a fine beach, a harbour, and the architectural sights of Gaudí's El Capricho and the Palace of the Marqués de Comillas. The route continues through the Parque Natural de Oyambre and along the beaches of Oyambre and Merón, where the Picos de Europa appear in the distance as you approach San Vicente de la Barquera.

Day 3: San Vicente de la Barquera (free day)
You will have a free day to explore this fishing village and its seafood restaurants at your own pace. Choose one of the free-day routes to the mountain village of Carmona, take a train to the fishing village of Llanes and cycle back, ride through the unspoilt hill country behind the village, or simply relax on the beach.

Day 4: San Vicente de la Barquera – Llanes (47 km)
You will cycle west around the headland of Pechón, crossing the River Deva at Unquera into Asturias. Colombres reveals the grand villas built by the indianos, emigrants who returned wealthy from the Americas. The road continues between the coast and the dramatic Sierra de Cuera, foothills of the Picos de Europa, before a descent through eucalyptus forests brings you to the beaches and the charming fishing village of Llanes.

Day 5: Llanes (free day)
You will spend a free day around Llanes, choosing between a string of fine beaches including the landlocked Playa de Gulpiyuri, the hills and valleys behind the village, a canoeing trip on the Deva or Sella rivers, a hike through the Cares Gorge, or a train ride to Ribadesella to see the prehistoric paintings of the Tito Bustillo Caves.

Day 6: Descent to Somo (43 km)
A vehicle transfer takes you into the Cantabrian Mountains, to the starting point of your descent of the Miera Valley at 822 metres above sea level. You will ride down through the limestone valley of the River Miera to the farmland around Somo and the Bay of Santander, passing the mountain village of San Roque de Riomiera and the spa village of Liérganes.

Day 7: Somo (free day)
You will have a final free day on the wide golden sands of Somo beach. A short boat ride takes you across the bay to Santander, capital of Cantabria, where you can stroll the belle époque seafront of El Sardinero or shop in the town centre. Or you will cycle through green country lanes to the beaches of Loredo, Langre, and Galizano, and the village of Ajo.

Day 8: Departure from Somo
You will be transferred from Somo to Santander or Bilbao for your onward journey.
