How the bicycle bonus works: everything you need to know

The year 2020 has brought great news for the world of cycling and bike tourism: the new Recovery Decree has officially introduced the bicycle bonus 2020, which provides for a contribution equal to 60% of the cost for the purchase of bicycles and electric vehicles such as scooters and segways, excluding cars.

The bonus was introduced with the aim of promoting sustainable mobility, particularly in large cities, addressing in part the issue of overcrowding public transport.

The bicycle will thus be the vehicle of the future and will increasingly become a key player in urban mobility and also traveling: so why not take advantage of it immediately?

We will explain in more detail below how it works and what the criteria for applying for the bicycle bonus are, post Covid:

  • the contribution covers up to 60% of the purchase cost, not exceeding 500 euros;
  • the bonus concerns purchasing of new or used bicycles, new or used handbikes, ebike, scooters, segway, hoverboards and similar;
  • however, the purchase of accessories is not provided for;
  • it is valid from May 4, 2020, to December 31, 2020;
  • the beneficiaries of the bonus are adult citizens residing in a regional capital, in a provincial capital, in municipalities with over 50,000 inhabitants and in Metropolitan Cities.

Bike bonus: how to apply for it

After clarifying the requirements to obtain the bike bonus 2020, it is essential to know how to apply for it to avoid errors in the procedure.

The application method is spelled out in two phases:

  • phase 1 is applicable until the moment a specific platform designed and communicated by the Ministry of the Environment is online, which will compile the list of all the shops participating in the program. Phase 1 provides that each individual buyer can already purchase their bike or their new or used electric vehicle in any Italian or foreign shop (also online). To receive the refund provided for by the bonus, however, it is crucial to be issued an invoice documenting the expense;
  • phase 2, on the other hand, will only be applicable after the platform is online and in that case, one can go to one of the shops participating in the program, paying only 40% of the total price, the seller will then request the refund directly.

In any case, to request the refund in phase 1 and the discount in phase 2, it is necessary to log in with your own SPID on an application that will soon be available online and will always be communicated by the Ministry for the Environment.

Electric bicycle bonus

The bonus plan also provides incentives for the electric bike or pedal-assisted bike. This is a significant contribution that helps in buying new or used electric bikes, which usually have a cost that can also reach up to a few thousand euros. Obviously, in this case too, the maximum limit of 500 euros of contribution applies, but it is a unique opportunity to fully prepare for the summer!
