Short Description

From the ancient cave dwellings of Matera to the sun-drenched shores of Salento, this cycling journey will take you through some of southern Italy's most extraordinary landscapes. You will pedal past the iconic trulli of Alberobello, glide through the rolling hills of the Itria Valley, and follow the coastline where the Ionian and Adriatic seas converge at the tip of the Italian heel. Every stage will reveal a different face of Puglia — the blinding white walls of Ostuni perched on its hilltop, the baroque splendour of Lecce, the crystal-clear waters of Gallipoli and Otranto. Along the way, you will stop at local butcher shops in Cisternino, taste the white wines of Locorotondo, and savour the freshest seafood the Adriatic has to offer. With two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a train ride through the Salento heartland, and eight days of unforgettable riding between ancient towns and turquoise coastlines, this is Puglia at its most authentic and immersive.

Tour Program

Day 1: Matera – Arrival
You will arrive in Matera, the extraordinary city carved into the rock on the border of Basilicata and Puglia. Its history stretches back more than 30,000 years — rupestrian churches, cave houses turned into atmospheric hotels, and the famous Sassi districts, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will surround you from the moment you step into town. Overnight stay in Matera.

Day 2: Matera – Alberobello (76 km; +650 m)
After the bike delivery and briefing, you will cycle through the southern part of the Murgia to reach Alberobello, the capital of the Trulli — distinctive small dry-stone buildings with conical roofs. Around 1,500 trulli are scattered through the Monti and Aia Piccola districts, both listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Overnight stay in Alberobello.

Day 3: Alberobello – Ostuni (52 km; +600 m)
Today you will ride over the hills of the Itria Valley, where red soil, green olive groves, vineyards and white trullo houses stretch as far as the eye can see beneath a serene blue sky. You will stop in Locorotondo for a white wine tasting, visit Martina Franca with its beautiful historic centre and stunning Palazzi, and pause in Cisternino for a lunch break at one of its famous butcher shops. Finally, you will cycle to Ostuni, the White City, whose whitewashed houses shine like a pearly white tiara across three hills. Shorter option available: 35 km / +340 m. Overnight stay in Ostuni.

Day 4: Ostuni – Gallipoli (train to Lecce, then cycling)
You will travel by train from Ostuni to Lecce (55 minutes). Bicycles travel free on regional trains. Once in Lecce, you will start cycling towards Gallipoli through the land of Baroque, visiting Galatina and Galatone with their beautiful churches. Overnight stay in Gallipoli.

Day 5: Gallipoli – Santa Maria di Leuca (71 km; +490 m)
Leaving Gallipoli, you will cycle along the Ionian coast to Torre San Giovanni, where the crystal-clear sea will tempt you to linger. A detour inland will take you to Ugento and Specchia, one of the most beautiful borghi in Italy. You will then continue for another 35 km to reach Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and the Adriatic seas meet at the southernmost point of Salento. Shorter option available: 52 km / +230 m. Overnight stay in Santa Maria di Leuca.

Day 6: Santa Maria di Leuca – Otranto (50 km; +680 m)
You will ride northward along the beautiful Adriatic coastline, crossing the marinas of Tricase Porto and Castro Marina before arriving in Otranto, one of the most captivating cities of Salento. Overnight stay in Otranto.

Day 7: Otranto – Lecce (64 km; +300 m)
In the morning, you will have the chance to visit Otranto's cathedral with its remarkable medieval mosaic floor. You will then cycle along the Alimini Lakes to Torre dell'Orso and the suggestive Grotta della Poesia. Before arriving in Lecce, you will pass through Acaya, a perfect stop for an espresso or a sunset drink in front of the castle. Overnight stay in Lecce.

Day 8: Lecce – Departure
