World Environment Day: how to be more green when traveling

The World Environment Day is a very important occasion to reflect on the conditions of the environment and the ways each of us has to protect it. From endangered animal species to pollution, if we want to guarantee ourselves a future, the first step to take is to defend the planet we live on.

World Environment Day, which is celebrated every June 5 was established in 1972 by the General Assembly of the United Nations and each year a specific theme is chosen as a common thread, which links all initiatives undertaken in honor of the environment. This year the theme will be #OnlyOneEarth, like the slogan of the first United Nations Conference, held precisely in 1972: a crucial occasion to reflect on the future of the planet and to find solutions that counteract pollution.

Tourism is certainly one of the sectors that is most questioning sustainability. For this reason, it is very important to be aware of the impact of your trips on the planet: we all have the ability to reduce our carbon footprint, just follow some simple measures that change our habits, for the better!

A positive datum from which to start is the increase in the number of Italian travelers more aware of the impact of their own holidays. A commitment that grows year after year and becomes increasingly fundamental in the choice of their own trips. According to the 2021 Univerde sustainable tourism report, for example, 58% of Italians when planning their own holidays face the issue of making choices that do not harm the environment.

Choosing a green trip doesn't just mean discovering unique places and landscapes, but also giving your own contribution to the wellbeing of the planet. Active tourism and therefore bicycle travel in fact significantly reduce pollution and environmental degradation caused particularly by cars and airplanes.

Practical advice to be more sustainable in travel

But how can you be more sustainable in travel?

The environmental sustainability is not an unreachable goal, just adopt a small series of measures to start practicing a type of responsible tourism:

  • choose a route to be walked or cycled is the ideal starting point to support the environment around us, discovering its beauties in a respectful and responsible way;

  • choose a structure with low environmental impact. There are many hotels to choose from, but it is very useful to opt for structures that invest resources in energy saving, bioconstruction, renewable resources and that are plastic-free;

  • choose to eat in a restaurant that promotes an idea of cuisine based on typical and short supply chain products is an important way not only to respect the environment, but also to savor the taste of local traditions;

  • be careful not to leave papers, tissues and waste along your path. It may seem like a trivial thing but in reality, one of the main problems with tourism is precisely the pollution of the environment, not only in terms of smog, but also of abandoned waste;

  • choose to use a refillable water bottle, instead of disposable plastic bottles.

Combine the pleasure of travel with the respect for nature is the perfect combination to discover the world around us, in an authentic and sensitive way.
