The Rhine Valley by bike

The Rhine cycle path is one of the most beautiful and longest cycling routes in Europe and covers a stretch of about 1,200 km, from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea. However, not necessarily the entire route can be traveled by bike, especially if you are traveling as a family.

The most traveled section is surely the one that goes from Mainz to Cologne, which covers a distance of about 145 km, a stretch that can be comfortably covered in about 4/5 days, perfect for those who want to take their time and enjoy the journey without rushing.

This route is perfect for families with children, since the route is mostly flat and on dedicated cycle paths, away from traffic. If instead you want to explore the Rhine from Switzerland, you can start from the source and descend to Holland, following the entire course of the river.

Castles, vineyards and villages

Traveling the Rhine by bike means having the opportunity to admire some of the most beautiful castles in Europe, which dot the valley for its entire length. Among the most famous are the Rheinfels Castle in St. Goar, which stands on a rocky promontory overlooking the river, and the Marksburg Castle in Braubach, the only castle in the Rhine Valley that was never destroyed. Then there are also the Pfalzgrafstein Castle and the Lorelei Rock, a rocky promontory about 120 meters high that rises majestically above the water.

Cycling through the vineyards of the Rhine Valley is an experience that will remain with you forever: in autumn, the vines change color, creating a breathtaking landscape. If you love wine, you can stop in one of the many wine villages that are found along the route and taste the famous Rhine wines, with their characteristic floral and fruity notes.

The villages that line the Rhine are picturesque and full of charm: stopping for a moment in these places, you will find yourselves immersed in the atmosphere of medieval charm. Typical half-timbered houses, narrow cobblestone streets and small squares where you can taste local specialties, make these villages perfect places to stop and recharge.

When to travel the Rhine by bike

The best period to travel the Rhine Valley by bike is undoubtedly spring and autumn. In these seasons, the temperatures are mild and pleasant, perfect for a bike tour. Summer, on the other hand, is the most crowded period, but certainly offers excellent weather conditions. Winter is less suitable, as the route can be wet and the days are shorter.

If you are planning to travel the Rhine with your children, spring and early autumn are undoubtedly the best periods: the pleasant weather will allow you to cycle in comfort and your little ones will be able to enjoy the journey to the fullest.
